This the second part of a conversation with my father, Marlin Vis. I have entitled this series the pastor and the professor, with my father as the pastor and I as the professor. My father was a pastor for over 20 years, and I have a Ph.D. in Old Testament and taught both Old and New Testament to undergrads and grad students. In this episode, we begin with some reflections on our first episode together, which was mostly about the validity of the claim that Jesus as the messiah was clearly predicted in the Old Testament. We spend some time talking about a couple of difficult texts of the Bible. How do we honestly wrestle with these texts? How should we respond to people who challenge us about some of the less attractive stories of the Bible? We then venture into a discussion about faith, about losing faith, and about our faith journeys. Like the first episode, we speak frankly about our experiences, our questions, our thoughts, and our ideas. If you liked the first episode of the pastor and the professor, I am confident that you will like this one as well.
